Sweden’s SKF Group, with 100 production units worldwide across three divisions – Industry, Automotive and Services - is a leading provider of joints, mechatronics and lubrication systems in the bearings market.
In France, SKF operates at 10 locations, eight of which focus on production. These include the SKF-SVR factory in Vendée where a 500-strong workforce produces a daily output of up to 700,000 standard and intelligent ball bearings, mainly for the automotive industry and electromechanical engineering sector.
"Our operators' hands are constantly exposed to two types of risk," explains Hygiene Safety and Environment manager Isabelle Deneufve.
"Being in contact all the time with large quantities of oil, grease and white spirit has posed serious hand allergy problems at SKF.”
Single-use chemical safety gloves
Handling and adjusting machines and tools, as well as changing and emptying containers, can also lead to bruises, cuts and crush injuries.
The SKF solution was to combine education, information and a high-quality, single-use chemical glove for hand protection.
"To reduce the onset of dermatitis at machining stations with soluble oil, we consulted with the staff and decided to equip our operators with single-use safety gloves,” says Ms Deneufve.
“After being trained in what the various icons meant, they pointed out to us the work gloves they were using didn't provide protection against chemical risks.
“So we tried out Ansell Touch N Tuff® safety gloves, which were already being used by our colleagues at St Cyr sur Loire.”
The “1 tool - 1 glove” campaign at SKF includes Ansell user icons to provide both wearer education and help persuade operators to use the safety gloves.
“The Ansell quality assurance system meets the stringent requirements applied by SKF,” says Ms Deneufve.
“It is this common concern for high quality which has guided our decision to use the Touch N Tuff® safety glove.”
The benefits for SKF are greater workplace safety, operator satisfaction and lower costs.
The SKF Group’s work safety program has
resulted in an 80 per cent reduction in the
number of accidents requiring outside care.
